Downstream Canyoneering to Kawasan Falls in Badian, Cebu

This is a guide and "things-you-need-to-know" of sort so...

Canyoneering in South Cebu has been a big hit since 2011 and is gaining more popularity in the last two years. I've noticed travellers never miss this activity when visiting South of Cebu. Indeed, it is something you shouldn't miss. It starts at Alegria passing through canyons that separate Alegria and Badian all the way down to Kawasan Falls. How awesome, yea?

How to get there:

From Cebu City
  • Ride a bus bound for Bato via Barili at South Bus Terminal
  • 3 hours away by bus
  • Tell the conductor to drop you off "Kawasan Falls" intersection.
  • Fare is Php147
We took the 3.30am bus and arrived in Badian around 6AM.

From Oslob
  • Ride any bus from Oslob bound for Bato
  •         travel time: 20Minutes, Fare is Php17-Php20
  • from Bato, ride a bus bound for Cebu via Barili
  •         Travel time: 1 & 20 Mins., Fare is Php45
  • Drop off at Kawasan Falls Intersection

Getting a Guide:

Kawasan Cebu Canyoneering

First and foremost, get yourself or your group a guide unless you're a pro at this and feeling over adventurous then go without a guide, although this is not really advisable. There are many guides/tour groups offering package tours (Guide, gears, snacks & Set meal). Go for the accredited and reputable tour operators. This is for your safety and it's also good for a sustainable tourism. This is where Kawasan Cebu Canyoneering comes in, we availed of their package and never encountered any problem at all. Our guides were Marvin & James, who, by the way, very fun and really helpful all through out the activity. They are experienced and seasoned guides who are swift water rescue trained. They took most of the photos in this post so hurray, guys! I highly recommend, Kawasan Cebu Canyoneering for a fun and safe adventure.

How much?

Priced at Php1500/Pax, this includes:

  • Trained & experienced (and FUN!) Guides
  • Gears; Life Vest & Helmet
  • Complimentary Snacks (Bottled Water & Muffin)
  • Entrance Fees
  • Trike ride to the jump-off point
  • and lunch after the activity

What to wear/ What to bring

Honestly, I was really torn between wearing my Sandugo Sandals or my Zemgear barefoot shoes. Well, I chose the latter since its way more comfortable and light weight than my sandals. Plus, its really non- slip, yoh! There, just wear any shoes you're comfortable with and preferably something that fits right or else you'll lose it from all the jumps. Improper or ill fitting footwear can easily ruin any enjoyable adventure. Just put on some shoes with a good grip. Cross trainers or running shoes.

Wear something light-weight. Gym Clothes will do but ideally, aqua suits, aqua pants, and long sleeved rash-guards will protect you from possible cuts and will also  keep you warm. Canyoneering can get pretty wet and dirty, you know. I wore quick dry top and shorts. Basically, my running clothes. LOL grappling products

  • A 500 ml water and some trail snacks( Eg: Peanuts, chocolates, banana, and hard boiled egg.) is already fine.
  • Extra Batteries for your camera
  • Money- You'll pass by a bbq shack and cafeterias in Kawasan falls level 1 & 2, you might need a few coins for some isaw or buko juice!
  • Cellphone- if you wish to bring with you your cellphone, make sure to put it in a waterproof pouch (eg: Ziplock) and inside the dry bag.

Although, it is not necessary to bring a lot. Less is always the best way to go.

THE EXPERIENCE...and more photos.

I'm always in for adventure, although I still have a lot of issue when it comes to jumping off cliffs and boulders. Thanks, claustrophobia. I am deeply scared of confined spaces but this activity is one big test to this big scare. I was scared but I did jumped.

Canyoning (known as canyoneering in the U.S.) is traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques that may include other outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling (rappelling), and/or swimming. -Wikipedia

Guides will brief you with what to do and what not's before you actually take the first crazy jump. Please listen attentively.

The first jump was cray. I had to jump about 2 storey high (Do I have a choice? I signed up for this!)
It was thrilling but I am sure as hell I let my group wait for me for about 3 minutes before I jumped.

I was stunned with the view after the first jump. It's so amazing. I couldn't even believe how blue the water is. Oh holy nature!

The succeeding jumps and slides were awesome and so much fun. I  totally enjoyed it. Our group enjoyed it. I didn't mind all the swimming and walking at all.

This is definitely a treat to every adventure junkies out there. One doesn't need to be a good swimmer when canyoneering but it would be a nice plus if you are. You will be walking, floating, swimming most of the time. Just one tip: Follow what your guide say and you'll be in no trouble.

The whole duration of the activity can take up to 4-5 hours depending on how many people in a group and how fast or slow you go.  You need not worry because the view is really stunning. Gorgeous canyons and massive rock formations.

I was under the impression that canyoneering is only for the brave and extreme adventurers. I am in so much awe knowing I conquered canyoneering in Kanlaob River. It afforded us non stop adrenaline rush and more.  I'd like to think I went fearless that day. It's the surreal feeling when you do something for the first time. Awesome awesome awesome!

Your reward? this... This turquoise basin for you to swim and jump into! Or maybe just order a Buko Juice while you take in the view.

Indeed, the best adventure in Cebu! High five!!!
